About this tool
URLs can only contain a limited set of characters. Encoding replaces everything else with % codes, so spaces become %20. Use it for query strings and links containing special characters.
How to use it
- To encode, paste text in the first box and press Encode.
- To decode, paste the encoded text in the second box and press Decode.
- Copy the result.
Frequently asked questions
What does %20 mean in a URL?
It is an encoded space. Each % code is a character’s byte value in hexadecimal.
Should I encode a whole URL?
No. Encode only the values, such as query parameters. This tool encodes characters like / and ?, which would break a full address.
Why does decoding fail?
A % sign not followed by two hexadecimal digits makes the text invalid.
