What is RCS Text Messaging?

Complete guide to RCS (Rich Communication Services) - the modern replacement for SMS. Learn what RCS text messages are, features, compatibility, and how to enable it.

📱 What Does RCS Mean in Text?

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It's the next generation of text messaging that replaces traditional SMS/MMS with advanced features like read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution photos, and more.

In simple terms: RCS is the modern version of the green-bubble text message. It works between Android phones and, since iOS 18, between iPhone and Android – with typing indicators, read receipts and full-quality photos, sent over mobile data or Wi-Fi.

What is RCS Text Messaging?

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an upgraded messaging protocol designed to replace SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). It provides a richer, more interactive messaging experience similar to popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, or Telegram.

What does “Text Message • RCS” mean? On an iPhone, the text field shows Text Message • RCS when you are chatting with someone (usually an Android user) over RCS instead of SMS. On Android, Google Messages shows RCS message or Chat message. Either way it means Rich Communication Services is active: your messages go over mobile data or Wi-Fi and support typing indicators, read receipts and high-quality media. If either side loses RCS, the chat falls back to plain SMS/MMS.

Not related to the textPlus app: RCS is a carrier and phone standard. It has nothing to do with the textPlus texting app or with this website.

RCS Compatibility: Who Can Use It?

✅ RCS Availability

Supported Platforms:

  • Android: Most Android phones running Android 5.0+ with Google Messages app
  • Carriers: Major carriers worldwide support RCS (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.)
  • iPhone: Supported since iOS 18 (September 2024) on participating carriers, for chats with non-iMessage users
  • Samsung Messages: Supported on Samsung Galaxy devices
  • Google Messages: Primary RCS messaging app on Android

Note: Both sender and recipient must have RCS enabled for advanced features to work. If one person doesn't have RCS, messages fall back to SMS/MMS.

How to Enable RCS on Your Phone

For iPhone (iOS 18 and later)

  1. Update iOS
RCS needs iOS 18 or later (Settings → General → Software Update).
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Messages
On early iOS 18 versions: Settings → Messages.
  3. Tap “RCS Messaging” and turn it on
If the option is missing, your carrier does not support RCS on iPhone yet.
  4. Check a chat with an Android user
The text field should now say “Text Message • RCS”.

For Android (Google Messages)

  1. Open Google Messages app
Make sure you have the latest version installed from Google Play Store
  2. Tap the three dots (⋮) in the top right
    Then select "Settings"
  3. Tap "Chat features" or "RCS chats"
    You'll see RCS settings here
  4. Toggle "Enable chat features" to ON
Your phone will verify and activate RCS (may take a few minutes)
  5. Wait for "Connected" or "Chat features are on"
Once connected, you can use RCS with other RCS users

For Samsung Messages

  1. Open Samsung Messages app
Default messaging app on Samsung phones
  2. Tap the three dots (⋮) → Settings
    Access messaging settings
  3. Tap "Chat settings"
    Find RCS options
  4. Enable "Rich communication"
    Toggle on to activate RCS

⚠️ Troubleshooting RCS

If RCS won't connect:

  • Make sure you have mobile data or WiFi enabled
  • Check that your carrier supports RCS
  • Update Google Messages to the latest version
  • Clear Messages app cache (Settings → Apps → Messages → Clear Cache)
  • Try toggling chat features off and on again
  • Restart your phone
  • Contact your carrier if issues persist

RCS vs iMessage

Feature RCS iMessage
Platform Android, and iPhone (iOS 18+) for chats with Android iPhone, iPad, Mac only
Cross-Platform ✅ Works between Android brands and with iPhone ❌ Apple devices only
Encryption ✅ End-to-end between Google Messages users; iPhone↔Android depends on support for the newer RCS encryption standard ✅ End-to-end
Fallback Falls back to SMS/MMS Falls back to SMS/MMS
Adoption Growing, carrier-dependent Very high among iPhone users

Is RCS Secure?

🔒 RCS Security & Privacy

  • Google Messages RCS: Offers end-to-end encryption for one-on-one chats (look for the padlock icon)
  • Group chats: End-to-end encrypted in Google Messages when every participant uses Google Messages with RCS
  • iPhone ↔ Android: The GSMA added end-to-end encryption to the RCS standard (Universal Profile 3.0, 2025) and Apple has said it will support it. Unless your chat shows it as encrypted, treat iPhone–Android RCS as not end-to-end encrypted
  • Carrier RCS: Encryption varies by carrier and implementation
  • Best practice: Use Google Messages with RCS for best security on Android
  • Verification: Look for the lock icon in chats to confirm end-to-end encryption is active

Frequently asked questions

What does RCS mean on my text messages?

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. On iPhone, “Text Message • RCS” in the conversation means your chat is using RCS rather than SMS, and it works with typing indicators, read receipts and high-quality media.

Is an RCS message charged like a text?

RCS is sent over mobile data or Wi-Fi rather than as an SMS, so it normally uses your data allowance, not your text allowance. Carrier fees may apply, so check your plan. If a message falls back to SMS or MMS, your usual text rates apply.

Can I turn RCS off on iPhone?

Yes. Go to Settings → Apps → Messages → RCS Messaging and switch it off. Your chats then use SMS instead.
