About this tool
Base64 turns any text or binary data into plain letters, digits and a few symbols, so it can travel safely through systems that only handle text, such as email attachments, data URLs and API tokens. This tool handles accented letters and emoji correctly because it encodes text as UTF-8 first.
How to use it
- Type or paste plain text in the top box and press Encode.
- To reverse it, paste Base64 in the lower box and press Decode.
- Copy the result.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Anyone can decode it, so it gives no protection. Use it to transport data, never to hide passwords or secrets.
Why does Base64 output end in = signs?
The = characters are padding. Base64 works in blocks of three bytes, and padding fills the last block when the input does not divide evenly.
How much bigger does Base64 make data?
About 33% bigger, because every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
